Jennifer Garner, born April 17, 1972 in Houston, Texas, was raised in Charleston West Virginia. William John Garner was her father, and was a chemical engineer at Union Carbide. The mother of her Patricia Ann taught at a local university. In order to follow in the footsteps of her father, she earned a chemical engineering degree. So that she could fulfill her desire to be an actor, she moved into New York. She was a chef at an eatery in New York and appeared in Broadway productions. She played a minor role in the film "Felicity" (where she also met Scott Foley). Garner was first seen in Alias, an action thriller. Her first major role was the widely-praised romantic comedy 13 Going on 30. She played a teenager trapped inside a 30+ year old's body. Garner decided to choose Gary Winick to direct the film; they continued to look for other films together up until the time of his death in 2011. Garner was appointed artist ambassador in 2011 by Save the Children U.S.A. This position focuses on encouraging nutrition and literacy across the United States and early schooling. Garner was a member as a member of the board since 2014, is an advocate of early education. In her role as an ambassador, Garner visits frequently with families that are part of Early Steps to School Success which is a program designed to guide parents in how to assist youngsters in their learning.
